Priority For The Greater Good

Who would imagine this scene, Singapore rolling out the red carpet literally for a couple joined in gay wedlock. They even named an orchid after him - the "Doritaenopsis Sir Elton John". Elton and his partner David Furnish were similarly attired in track suits, so it was difficult to tell who actually wears the pants in their household. And who changes the baby diapers.

That could be one reason for the big welcome. The message that gays can help boost the population growth statistic without worrying about the bothersome TFR. A colleague had a quick put down for the alternate lifestyle: homosexuals are unnatural because they can't reproduce. Well, it looks like she could be wrong. Baby Zachary makes three.

And if Elton John signs up for a red passport, little Zachary will grow up to play golf at Orchid Country Club in the north and then zip down the spanking new North-South Expressway to Marina Bay Sands for a session at the baccarat tables. He probably will have to choose between a Porsche, Ferrari or Lotus Esprit, that's 3 COEs less for the lesser mortals. That's also one way to double the GDP by 2025.

Too bad the Rochor Centre folks have to be evicted to make way for the grandiose plans. "I hope they understand that their sacrifice is for the greater good, " said their MP Denise Phua. Latter claims to understand that there are residents who are angry with the move, adding, "It's difficult but we have to accept the Government's decision". Way up north, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew could not assure the Nanyang Pho Heng association whether their request to move back to their original site after all the dust has settled would be entertained.

Major road works for the NSE project will begin from 2015. Both Lui and Ms Phua should take note that the next election is due in 2016.

  1. ST headline: Rochor residents COMPLAIN about having to leave flats

MSM under the indirect influence of MICA will like to portray Rochor Centre residents as complainers and opportunists who are exploiting the situation to enrich themselves rather than the contrary.

If there are responsible media, they should dig further and examine if the acquisition is truly necessary, how much the residents are shortchanged by the compensation package, what are the residents' grievances.

Someone may have just paid high COV and market rate for a flat there. Then there may be people who have spent a large sum of money on renovation recently. Now, they are all told to leave and sacrifice for the greater good.

When has the govt sacrifice their obscene pay cheque and bonuses for the greater good of funding social development and welfare. The trust between govt and people has already been broken, so don't ask for sacrifice. Just pay the Rochor residents what they deserve and don't shortchange them.

  2. Worry 2016? Nah - Denise Phua wrote on FB to residents that she takes their 'grave" matters very seriously, suggested there'll be covered Pavilions so they never need to pay for funeral tentages when their time comes. How thoughtful. You gotta to give it to them. When they have to dig your ancestors out of your burial grounds, in return they offset some of your funeral costs..YPAP should start their recruitment early at hospitals for new born babies so to encompass their 'from cradle to grave' services.

  3. U think Lui & Phua are concerned of these residents' votes? Wanna bet whether they will get voted into office in 2016? Sgeans are simply daft and will be too scare to protect their own interest. Serve us right

  4. What are the criterion for naming orchids after 'certain dignitaries' ?

Isn't it ironic that we have to demolish hundred years old site like Bt Brown that has naturally rich biodiversity and endangered spieces for that man-made-Garden-in an-air-con dome that costs us billions of dollars to build + entrance fee. Would you chop off a pair of your legs and replace them with prosthetic legs so that you can run faster?

I don't know what to say. But bet the foreign celebrities certainly enjoy their says while our local celebrities flip in their graves in silence.

  5. Red carpet and red passport priority -- there you go = 91K GDP by 2025!
You think Annabel Chong deserve an orchid name after her? After all she has the gangbuster record of trying out so many spiecies you know. And appropriately the greek name for orchid is origin from 'testicles'...hehe

  6. .. if some people take more than they need, others are left with less than they need...when rich people are busy shopping for their global 2nd-home, others are busy keeping up with 1st-mortgage loan @ more space persqft, thanks to HDB rhetoric...

nobody wants to pick a fight with wealthy householders. So it's up to us to give them no choice.. It cannot be left to the market, as the market works for the rich ...

  7. MP Denise Phua is indeed very farsighted.
She knows that for the GREATER GOOD OF SIN, Rochor Residents should make sacrifice of whatever they like about staying at Rochor.

Nearby Bugis is a thriving business district that is as good as Orchard Road. Whence Rochor Centre is REDEVELOPED and connected to Bugis, it will become a prime commercial location as good as Orchard Road and may even surpass it.

The future value of Rochor when fully re-developed will be many times its' present worth. For the sake of Sin, MP Denise Phua WILL DEFINITELY WISH that her constituents understand the need for them to understand the Greater good.

  9. They would even name an orchid after any celebrity as long as they can add the glam factor to the $91,000 GDP goal.

And please explain to me, why do I have to pay to get "indoor" to enjoy fake nature when I have all the "outdoor" of Bt Brown and its rich biodiveristy to enjoy for free. It certainly didn't need $1billion to build!
